Chapter 2: Could it Be...
Someone We Know? Amina Maria?
Her name was Amina Maria. She was only seventeen months old when everybody noticed she had a passion for books; a strong connection to literature. Amina felt that fervor even before she was conceived…for her mother not only was an academic librarian but also an avid reader herself. In addition, Amina had an aunt who was a children’s librarian that showered her with books almost every day of her short existence.
Amina had her very own library. Amina’s mother read to her every day and night while she carried her in her womb. In the nine months that Amina progressed from being an embryo to a beautifully formed baby, her mother introduced her to a myriad of authors and illustrators. She would perceive baby Amina’s glee whenever she opened books about a big red dog named Clifford. As she read the title and author’s name, Norman Bridwell, Amina’s energetic bursts of joy would make her mother beam with delight. Both mom and daughter continued their shared passion for books as the nine months of pregnancy turned into a fun-loving bond between mother and child.
It is primordial to acknowledge Amina’s ancestors’ deep connection to meaningful literature as well. Her great grandfathers and great grandmothers all read enthusiastically since it instilled a sense of wisdom and knowledge in a time when books were limited in production. They taught their offspring, Amina’s grandparents how to value and honor books no matter their content or quality. Reading for them was considered a luxury; an ever-popular past-time that enriched the eyes and minds of those that practiced literature exploration. One could be reading a newspaper, magazine, comic book, or dictionary and they would be praised for their discipline in improving their lexicon. Amina’s grandparents had a particular strong passion for new age and spiritual literature.
Grandfather spent countless nights devouring Sufi tales from Arabia while grandmother cherished Buddhist tales from Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, and India. In fact, Amina’s name was selected because of renowned Amina Shah; a wondrous Sufi storyteller. In essence, the name Amina, means “the loyal one”. Amina’s loyalty to books became an ever-present reality.
It was a common sight to stumble upon little Amina sitting all by herself in her Elmo miniature sofa, reading. She had the tendency to point at words and illustrations as she flipped the pages from corner to corner. She ensured to always look at the book’s cover, analyze the title page, and even notice the fine print towards the bottom indicating the book’s publisher and publishing year. She was always delicate in her handling of books, in fact, she revered them so much that she always placed them on a safe place, nicely arranged rather than leaving them spread on the floor. Although she thoroughly enjoyed having books read to her by either familiar librarian, her mother or aunt, Amina developed an enhanced pleasure for independent reading. When the room she was in became quiet, we all knew to leave her in peace for she was completely immersed in the book’s characters and plot. Her deep concentration on words and pictures made her one of the most popular kids at daycare since her book craze lead her counterparts to experience exactly the same.
In essence, Amina became known as the little bookworm at Daycare Junction and all the kids couldn’t wait to see what Amina was carrying in her book bag. Now here is the question: do you think Amina might really be....Bookus?
